Contests and Events
Presentations are not the only reason people go to cons. We realize that mingling and networking are as much if not more important to many going to hacker cons. That, and with all of the tech you will be learning, even the most hardcore geek needs a break. Keeping that in mind, we have put together a number of cool side events that should keep you entertained while taking those much needed breaks.
Hack/Or/Halo
A tradition started at our inaugural event, a gaming twist on the oh-so-typical Capture the flag hacking contest. On one side of the house, King of the Hill Halo. On the other, a hacking contest. Winners of each get prizes to assist them in the other. In years past, hackers have won X-Boxes, and gamers have won wireless gear. Bone up on your skillz and come try out your hand against a number of top-notch geeks.
Applied Security "HackIt 2.0"
Last year's wildly popular hacking contest is making a return appearance
with new challenges, prizes and twists! Come test your skills on a
variety of exploitable bugs, bit-fu, broken code, and other related goodies!
Prizes include:
1st Prize: Wii with games
2nd Prize: Iphone
3rd Prize: $250.00 Amazon.com card
Raffle Prize: For each level a contestant completes they will receive
one chance to win a Wii console.
Stop by the Applied Security Booth for rules and registration!
Podcasters Meet-up
Come meet the faces behind the microphones, cameras and mixers at the second annual Podcaster's Meetup hosted at ShmooCon '08. Swag, contests, and a live broadcast. Among the famous and not so famous will be SploitCast, Pauldotcom, Hak.5 and Secthis along with many more of your favorite shows and hosts. It's on Friday the 15th after the talks are done and dusted. For further updates and information check out PodcastersMeetup.com
T-shirt Charities
You've got your share of con shirts, but how many of your con shirts have made a difference in the world? The ShmooCon T-shirt Charity Drive lets you do just that. Pay your money, get your shirt and toss a chip to the charity of your choice. On Sunday we convert the chips back into Hamiltons, and three great causes find out we've got their back. This year we're supporting One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), the EFF, and Hackers For Charity.
ShmooCon Ads
Well, video is the next killer app for the InterWeb... it just took 8 years of people saying it to be true. Well, as is becoming tradition, people are making ads for this year's ShmooCon. Check them out, and if you are interested, make your own.
