ShmooCon Labs for 2008 Announced!
11/18/2007
Shmoocon Labs Submissions are now being accepted
ShmooCon Labs: Feb. 14th
How to kill even more brain cells before a hacker conLast year we introduced Shmoocon Labs. A pre-con event where a limited number of attendees participated in constructing the con network using enterprise equipment provided by network and security vendors. The first Shmoocon Labs went so well that we have decided to do it again this year.
How It Works
Every year at Shmoocon we put a ton of work into the design and setup of our conference network. Shmoocon Labs opens this up to the public allowing a handful of con attendees and vendors to participate in the design, construction and troubleshooting. If you are aspiring engineer looking for some real world hands on experience, a geek who gets off on building networks, or a vendor interested in seeing your gear light up in a challenging environment then Shmoocon Labs is for you.
This is not your normal vendor dog and pony show. We are building a network that needs to be up and running in time for the conference so be prepared to jump in the fire. During Shmoocon various aspects of the network will be made available for attendees to hack on and all vendors should expect their products to get looked over with a fine tooth comb or a 20 pound hammer.
Last year during Shmoocon Labs participants did things like:
- Configure and harden cisco switches
- Setup OpenLDAP, Network Monitoring, DHCP, DNS
- Worked with IPS vendors to see why their gear was breaking the network
- Write test and trouble shoot firewall rules
- Analyze packet captures
- Test IDS/IPS gear with live exploits
- Defend systems against live attacks
- Perform Vulnerability Assessments on the conference network gear
Registration
Shmoocon Labs is only open to people who have tickets for Shmoocon. Also we request that all labs participants pay $50 to help us cover the cost of hotel space rental and incidental costs.
Conference Attendees:
Registration is open to conference attendees but we are limiting attendance to 40 people. Also, note that there will be a $50 charge to help us cover the costs of running the event. There are no hard and steadfast prerequisites, however we expect this event to be best suited towards people with interests in Network Engineering, System Administration and IT Security. We are looking for seasoned veterans and rookies as well so we can all share knowledge, maybe learn something and most of all have a good time!
There is an application process for attending. If you are interested in attending, please send the following information to shmooconlabs@shmoocon.org.
- Summary of work/academic experience
- Why you are interested in attending the labs
- If you feel you are able to serve as a lead in a specific area
- If you are able to show up a day early to help stage the lab
Vendors:
Vendors are expected to bring working production level gear to Shmoocon Labs, ready to implement. In addition you will be expected to provide a product expert to participate in the planning leading up to the event and in the actual hands on session. We will be screening vendors to insure that we have an environment conducive for learning, cooperation and getting the network up and running.
If you are a vendor that is interested in participating please contact shmooconlabs@shmoocon.org.
